Da Nang to host the 5th Asian Beach Games in 2016
Da Nang to host the 5th Asian Beach Games in 2016
27/05/2015 15:11

The Prime Minister recently approved adjustments to the organisation of the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG 5) which will take place next year in Viet Nam. Changes have been made to Vietnam's 2016 Asian Beach Games plan following recommendations from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in order to make the event more economically sustainable.

ABG 5 was scheduled to be held in Da Nang and the provinces of Khanh Hoa and Binh Thuan in June 2016, but will now take place from September 23 to October 4 next year and only in Da Nang.  The decision to organise the event in only one locality will allow the event’s organisers to save costs and facilitate their management of this biennial event.

In addition, windsurfing, sailing, dragon boat racing and jet-skiing will be withdrawn from sports programs, whilst beach petanque, beach body building and a water sports category consisting of marathon swimming and water polo, will be added.  The beach martial arts category will comprise pencak silat, vovinam, wrestling, sambo, jujitsu, kurash, muay Thai, and combat in Vietnamese traditional martial arts.

Around 3,500 athletes from 45 Asian Nations are expected to compete in 14 sports in the fifth edition of the Asian Beach Games.

The last event, held in Phuket, Thailand in 2014, was largely hailed as a huge success and the VOC will be hoping they can replicate that next year. Vietnamese athletes managed a fifth-placed finish on the medal table at the 2014 competition as they secured eight gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze medals.

The 5th Asian Beach Games logo is designed to simulate waves and sand in the shape of young, healthy and dynamic athletes performing sport (volleyball, handball) with the symbol of the Olympic Council of Asia inside.

With the power and strength of sports, all parts of the logo rise up to form a big V shape (which means “Vietnam”, “Victory”, “V”-the fifth in Greek symbol...) that affirm the role of the host country, highlight the competition spirit as well as the athletes’ aspiration of winning.

The combination between the sea and the sand waving together reflects the strength and strong will of Vietnam Sports as well as carries the message of friendliness and welcome all sport delegations; represents the solidarity and friendship of Asian family with the expectation of a successful the 5th Asian Beach Games.

Mascot

The 5th Asian Beach Games Mascot is swiftlet, a special characteristic of the coastal Central South of Vietnam where is famous for bird nests- a high economic value product in general and a specialty of Khanh Hoa province in particular.

The mascot is a stylized boy with funny hair on top of the head, small V-shaped tail (a characteristic of swiftlet), holding a lighted torch which represents solidarity, peace and vitality of mankind. The sun of the Olympic Council of Asia and the traditional waves on the outfit of the Mascot symbolize the Asian Beach Games.

The colors used for the Mascot are blue, red, black and yellow which represent blue sea, yellow sand and the bird feather.
