Preservation and promotion of the national cultural identity

Ethnic sport forms part of Vietnamese traditional culture and has a long history. It was formed along with nation’s development and reflects the unique traditional culture. According to Vietnamese Prime Minister, the strategy for sports and physical training development for <st1:place w:st="on">Vietnam until 2020 consists of “setting out some important tasks to develop models for building sport facilities; to organise sport activities in hamlets, villages and communes; and to prioritise the training of human resources for sport development in remote and ethnic minority regions. A number of folk games will be included to the national sport competion program and Vietnamese traditional martial arts will be preserved and developed.”

Promotion of the country’s economic potential

Vietnamese traditional sports form part of the nation’s sport development.  It is considered as the country’s asset and culture, which provide great economic benefits. The emphasis on the development of the country’s ethnic sports will contribute to the nation’s sport development. Sport products bearing Vietnamese cultural identity will facilitate the penetration of the Vietnamese firms into the international market. Therefore, promoting national sport development will become a new source of economic growth for the nation.

With the progressive development of Vietnam’s socio-economy, sport products have various usage purposes. Today, Vietnam has witnessed the diversity of sport products and services (e.g. sport equipments, traditional ethnic sport items, rental locations, tourism, TV shows, advertising, ticketing, medical products and sport insurance) which generates significant economic benefits for the country.

In order to integrate into the market economy and to contribute to the development of the national economy, it is necessary to promote the strong development of traditional sports and consider it as a source of the nation’s economic growth.

Ethnic sports underlie the development of modern sports

The history and development of sport and physical education are closely linked to social development through promotional and production activities. It can be said that the labour production is the basic source of sport and physical training since the production process involves various skills (e.g hunting and surviving) which require mankind to physically exercise (i.e. running, jumping, climbing, carrying and withstand harsh conditions of the surrounding environment). Over time, they acquire and enhance their speed, strength, endurance, ingenuity, observation skills and ability to withstand.

As the living standard and the human knowledge increase, mankind draw from their experience and skills and passed them on to the next generation. They also organise games and competitions during their free time after work or during festivals. These activities give rise to the following sports: Martial arts, sepaktakraw, javellin throwing etc…/.(tapchithethao.vn)
