Vietnam’s Little Mermaid swims to golden hat-trick

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 22, 2017: After two days of swimming at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil, Vietnam’s “Little Mermaid” Nguyen Thi Anh Vien has recorded a hat-trick of gold medals and broken two SEA Games records in the process.

On Tuesday, Anh Vien earned two gold medals, in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:13.64, breaking her own SEA Games record of 2:14.12. Later in the evening she added another gold medal in the women’s 400m freestyle.

On Monday – the first day of swimming – the 21-year-old Vietnamese star won a gold medal in the women’s 100m backstroke in a new SEA Games record of 1:01.89.

Talking with the media, she revealed a secret which helped her to be more self-confident in conquering the competition at the SEA Games: That is, she always wears an old red jacket whenever competing at the SEA Games and it has become her lucky charm.

“It was the jacket I wore when I first started competing a long time ago. It gives me confidence,” she said. Anh Vien won eight gold medals at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore in 2015 and is aiming for 8 to 10 gold medals this time.
