On September 5th, H.E.Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister had cordially received the Vietnam Sport Delegation to congratulate on their achievements at the 29th SEA Games. Also present at the meeting were H.E. Mr Vu Duc Dam, Deputy Prime Minister, H.E.Mr Dinh Tien Dung, Minister of Finance and H.E.Mr Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism and President of Vietnam Olympic Committee.

On behalf of the Vietnam Sport Delegation, Representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism briefed the Prime Minister on the achievements recorded by the Vietnamese atheletes at this major regional sport event. Totally, the Vietnam Sport delegation won 58 gold medals, 50 silver medals and 60 bronze medals allowing them to be placed in the top 3 on the Games medal tally and accomplish their objectives.

At the meeting, representatives of coaches and athletes expressed their deep gratitude to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Vietnamese Government and sport fans in <st1:place w:st="on">Vietnam for extending them their generous supports which contribute to such spectacular results at the 29th SEA Games. Representatives of coaches and athletes also promised to continue their hard work with a view to attaining new milestones for Vietnam Sport.

Expressing his pleasure to meet with athletes and coaches who brought glory to the national sport, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc warmly congratulated and praised the resounding achievements of coaches and athletes competing at the 29th SEA Games.

The Prime Minister highly appreciated coaches and athletes in the delegation for sparing no efforts in training, competing and respecting the rules and regulations of the tournament. In their competitions, all athletes in the delegation have promoted the national traditions and competed in the spirit of honesty and nobility in sport for the national flag and pride.

Therefore, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc believed that the achievements and glory recorded by the Vietnam Sport Delegation is also the common joy of the nation. The achievements in international sports competitions are not only significant in the field of sports but also in other domains such as politics, economics and tourism, leaving good impressions among people and international friends.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also referred to the number of medals that allow the Vietnam Sport Delegation to be ranked third in the medal tally. Among the medals received, 17 gold medals are won in athletic – an Olympic sport and for the first time, Vietnam stayed on the top of this sport in the region after defeating Thailand at this SEA Games edition.

It should also be noted in this SEA Games edition that the Vietnam Sport Delegation had a 15 year old athlete who won a gold medal and that the Female Football Team won gold medals at the SEA Games for the fifth time.

After appreciating the efforts of coaches in training their students, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also praised, recognised and appreciated athletes’ parents and families for educating, supporting, creating opportunities along with the State for reassuring themselves, continuing their practice and bringing glory to the country.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked athletes, coaches and the Vietnam Sport to overcome the problems that have prevented some sports from meeting their targets and fans’ expectations. Along with that is the determination in training and competition; the development of solutions in closing the performance gap between <st1:country-region w:st="on">Vietnam and other regions in the world through drastic and revolutionary solutions.</st1:country-region>

The Prime Minister also instructed the Vietnam Sport to develop a suitable policy system to increase the efficiency and quality of elite sports; unceasingly improve professional skills for coaches; be more active in finding and training talented young athletes for Vietnam Sports; to continue the implementation of socialisation policy in order to attract more resources for developing Vietnam Sport; to reward new talents; to maintain and improve achievements in upcoming international and regional tournaments.
