ANOC World Beach Games set to be amazing show
ANOC World Beach Games set to be amazing show
10/11/2017 12:12

Prague, Czech Republic, November 2, 2017: The inaugural ANOC World Beach Games grew from a dream to reality during a dynamic and passionate presentation at the 22nd ANOC General Assembly at the Prague Hilton Hotel on Thursday afternoon. The delegates heard that the first ANOC World Beach Games will open in San Diego, California, on October 10, 2019 and last for for six days. There will be 17 disciplines in 15 sports, attracting 1,300 athletes from between 75-80 NOCs.

The ANOC World Beach Games will be based on the highly successful Asian Beach Games – the initiative of the OCA and which were first held in Bali, Indonesia, in 2008.

The ANOC World Beach Games will embrace youth culture and project a modern presentation of sport, with family-based fun and played out against a background of music and festivity. The Secretary General of ANOC, Gunilla Lindberg, said the inaugural World Beach Games had been scaled down compared to the original plans for the postponed 2017 version, making the event more manageable, compact and efficient.

The budget had been reduced from 140 million USD to 38 million USD, and ANOC will subsidise the participation of the NOCs, said the ANOC Secretary General. It was originally intended to hold 20 sports over 10 days.

Although the final sports programme has not been fixed, the number of athletes for each discipline will dictate the qualification procedure for the five continental associations. All 206 NOCs will be invited to attend and the goal is for every continent to be represented and for the sports to achieve gender equality.

ANOC Technical Director Haider Farman said he was convinced the focus on beach and sea sports and youth culture would create “an amazing show” as well as new sports stars around the world. The supporting ANOC meetings for 2019 will run from October 6-8, with the General Assembly on October 9-10. The six-day Games will take place from October 10-15 and organisers are expecting 40,000 spectators a day at the events, which will all be held on the iconic Mission Beach.

The opening ceremony will be at Petco Park. All venues for the beach and sea sports will be temporary, and the event will leave no footprint in terms of games infrastructure.

An idea that began in 2013 and came into view when San Diego was appointed host city in 2015 became very much a reality for 2019 at the ANOC General Assembly on Thursday – the second major development under the leadership of HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah following the establishment of the annual Gala Awards running alongside the General Assembly.
