OCA President praises Indonesia’s role in Olympic sports movement
OCA President praises Indonesia’s role in Olympic sports movement
29/11/2017 09:17
On November 27, the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, has praised the contribution of Indonesia to the Olympic Movement in Asia and the world.

In a welcome message to 128 delegates from 21 countries at the Asian Games International Media Forum at the Century Park Hotel on Monday, Sheikh Ahmad said Indonesia had played a major role in the development of Olympic sport.

“I would like to thank Indonesia for their contribution to the Olympic Movement over many decades,” Sheikh said.

“As well as hosting the fourth Asian Games in Jakarta in 1962, Indonesia also organised our first Asian Beach Games in Bali in 2008.

“The OCA has built on the success of this first Asian Beach Games and we have now held five memorable events.

“Furthermore, the beach and sea sports concept has been embraced globally, with the Association of National Olympic Committees now organising the first ANOC World Beach Games in San Diego, California, in October 2019, with the participation of all 205 NOCs.

“Indonesia can take a lot of credit for this exciting development in the Olympic sports movement, as it played a pioneering role in establishing the OCA’s Asian Beach Games.”

The Asian Games International Media Forum is being held to brief Asian NOCs and media organisations about the preparations and procedures for the 18th Asian Games, which will take place in Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

Sheikh Ahmad said the local organising committee INASGOC had done a fine job in preparing the venues and other infrastructure to host 40 sports, 67 disciplines and 462 events.

“Our 18th Asian Games are less than nine months away – and I would like to congratulate INASGOC for the progress they have made in the past three years,” Sheikh said.

“We are convinced that, with the cooperation of the OCA, our 45 National Olympic Committees and Asian Sport Federations, everything will be in place and ready to stage a wonderful Asian Games in August and September 2018.”

The President of INASGOC, Mr Erick Thohir, said Indonesia was making the impossible become possible, considering the timeframe and the scale of the Asian Games.

“It is a challenge - and it is the job of our country to make the Asian Games a success and to become a good host,” he said.

Mr Thohir also spoke of the long-term benefits for Indonesia, including an upgrade in the sports venues and surrounding park and recreation areas, as well as transport infrastructure in Jakarta and Palembang.

Presentations on the first morning of the forum included a general overview, media services and operations, sports and venues, broadcasting, accreditation (media accreditation will open in January and close on April 9), arrival and departure, customs clearance, accommodation and transportation.
