President Widodo: Athletes’ Village ‘99.9% ready’ for Asian Games

Jakarta, Indonesia, March 8, 2018: The new Athletes’ Village in Jakarta is ready for the Olympic Council of Asia’s 18th Asian Games this August, according to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo. The Jakarta Globe reports that the complex, in Kemayoran, north Jakarta, comprises 15 tower buildings with 7,426 units. It can accommodate more than 20,000 athletes and officials.

“The Athletes’ Village is 99.9 percent ready; it just needs some little touch-ups," President "Jokowi" said when he visited the site on Monday, February 26.

The construction, which started in 2016, was developed by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and state-owned residential developer Perum Perumnas. It cost the state Rp 3.4 trillion ($238 million). The OCA’s 18th Asian Games will be held from August 18 to September 2 in Jakarta and Palembang, capital of South Sumatra province. The Athletes’ Village inside the Jakabaring Sports City in Palembang has been upgraded for the Asian Games and will accommodate 2,000 athletes and officials.

"Our recent test event series shows that the complex is nearly perfect," said Mr Thohir, who is also President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee. With 40 sports and 462 events on the programme, organisers are expecting 10,000 athletes and 5,000 officials from the OCA's 45 National Olympic Committees to take part in the 18th Asian Games 2018.
