Iran moves closer to full women’s freedom in sports
Iran moves closer to full women’s freedom in sports
01/10/2018 12:10

New York, United States, September 26, 2018: Another step in the march for women’s emancipation in sports in Iran was taken when International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach met Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the ongoing 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Female participation in sport in Iran was among the topics discussed between President Rouhani and the IOC chief.

“Discussing the role of women in sport in Iran, President Rouhani confirmed again his campaign policy to give women equal access to sport in the country,” the IOC said in a statement.

Shooter Elaheh Ahmadi became the first woman to carry Iran’s flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Asian Games in Jakarta.

Iran’s policies regarding women in sport have been relaxed in recent years. Since 1981, women have been banned from stadiums to watch football matches and this was extended to include volleyball in 2012.

President Rouhani called for the ban to be lifted earlier this year, and tentative steps have been made since to allow women into stadiums for the two sports.

In his meeting with Bach, President Rouhani reportedly repeated his vow to achieve his campaign policy to ensure equal access to sport in the country. “The IOC President encouraged this policy and told him that the IOC looked forward to further developments in this field.” (Ocasia.org)
