Kuwait: The Olympic Council of Asia has announced the timetable for two days of meetings and celebrations in Manila, capital of the Philippines, later this month. The programme begins on the morning of Friday, January 17 and includes the 64th OCA Executive Board meeting. However, the highlight of the first day will be the Asian Games Centennial Festival to mark the 100th anniversary of the first international multi-sport event to be held in Asia - the Far Eastern Championship Games in Manila in February 1913.
This event would eventually evolve into the Asian Games, first held in New Delhi, India, in 1951 and enjoying an unbroken sequence through to the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, from September 19 to October 4, 2014.
The 32nd OCA General Assembly will take place on Saturday, January 18, at the Philippine International Convention Centre, a short walk from the Sofitel Hotel headquarters.
These events should have been held on Boracay Island, Philippines, in late November 2013 but were called off due to the devastation caused by Super Typhon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda), which claimed over 6,000 lives after hitting the Philippines on November 8.
The OCA wanted to show solidarity and unity with the Philippines by keeping the events in the country, and in the capital Manila - home of the 1st Far Eastern Championship Games over 100 years ago.
